Staedtler 925-25-20 silver 2 mm leadholder photo session and first impression

Ever since I spotted the Staedtler 925-25-20 silver 2 mm leadholder in several fine blogs (like Leadholder.com, Dave's Mechanical Pencils, and Pencil Talk), I had hoped that Jet Pens would bring this beautiful aluminum mechanical pencil to the USA. After waiting for over a year, my wish finally came true. It seems I was not the only one judging by how quickly their remaining stock has dwindled in the past week. I am not about to rehash the thorough reviews already posted long ago in the aforementioned blogs, so I will just share a few photos and my first impression of the most recent addition to my Staedtler collection.
It is certainly a step up from the ubiquitous Staedtler 780 leadholder.
The silver leadholder taken apart into its basic components.
Close up of the uniquely designed knurled metal finger grip and degree indicator ring. The finely textured metal surface provides a secure holding section without being uncomfortably abrasive.
Close up of interior clutch mechanism that holds the drawing lead securely, advances it in a controlled manner, and prevents it from falling off when pressing the button like conventional leadholders.
One sharp looking 2 mm mechanical pencil.
Fun sketching tool.
The Staedtler 925-25-20 silver 2 mm leadholder affords precise control while sketching and looks great: a perfect combination of form and function that is sure to please fellow leadholder aficionados.

What I especially noticed about the 925 is the grip which rates a 10 out of 10 on "grippiness". I felt absolutely no slip while using it. Depending on your drawing style this could be a good or bad thing.

Secondly, if you are itching for a particular item, you should try bundoki. The website is in japanese but you can have it translated by google. The service is fantastic and while delivery will cost ~$10, you will more than make up for this because of their lower prices which are typically 2/3 those of JetPens. I love JetPens but don't feel the need to pay them more than necessary. For instance, Bundoki is currently selling this item for 1200 yen (~$12.75) as opposed to JetPen's $18. Note that you will need a PayPal account.

Thanks! the Bundoki tip is good to know and might be quite helpful to some of my readers. I check the Bundoki site from time to time when
"researching" items not available in the USA, but I can't really shop with them since I do not use PayPal.

Since my first exposure to 2mm lead in the mid '60's I have dreamed of a pencil like this one. I never understood why no one made one before! I can't begin to count the number of sticks of lead shattered on the floor because I forgot to "catch" the lead as it was released.

After reading your post I ordered one from Jetpens and am thrilled with it. I'm thinking of acquiring a second one so I can have two different sizes of lead at the ready.

Thanks so much for the review!

You are quite welcomed! Glad you are enjoying your new leadholder. Btw, 2mm leads for the Uni leadholders also featured at Jet Pens have a holding ring at the end of the lead that prevents them from falling off the leadholder. I tend to take the Uni leadholders with me to the field and keep the Staedtler 925-35-20 at my drafting table.

Thank you for nice review.
I'm looking to buy such pencil and your review is moving me in this direction even more.

Just wandering, what is a range of the lead degree indicator?

I don't think anyone interested in this type of mechanical pencils would be disappointed by trying this fairly unique 2 mm leadholder. Its lead grade indicator range is: 4H, 2H, H, HB, B, 2B, 4B.

Jumping around with 5 new pencils.
Ordered on pencils.jp (looks like English speaking incarnation of bundoki; need to learn japan to order from bundoki:-)

Total is less then will be on jetpens.com. Take 4 days to deliver from JP to FLA.

Thank you a lot for your blog and your responses to my questions!

You are welcomed! Oooh they have the red Mitsubishi Uni leadholder and others that I would love to add to my collection. Too bad I do not use PayPal. Well, I probably shouldn't get any more items in that category anyway.
