Since I couldn't find the colors I needed from the
Faber Castell Albrecht Durer open stock rack while searching for some replacements for my
travel canvas wrap set at the Ft. Lauderdale
Pearl store, I ended up picking up these
Caran D'Ache Supracolor II watercolor pencils instead.
Caran D'Ache is the only manufacturer that I am aware of that features the removable plastic UPC labels wrapped around the tips of their pencils marketed for individual sale as open stock. Clever idea that reduces the clutter that needs to be printed or taped on the barrels of the pencils. Their soft leads allowed for some quick coverage while drawing the color chart swatches.

The dry color samples readily dissolved into smooth saturated washes with the aid of a watercolor brush loaded with water. My first impression of this
Caran D'Ache pencil line is that its performance is quite similar to that of my favored
Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils. With their retail prices being quite close at stores and online, I would consider them interchangeable next time I need to refill a set.

Nice. I like the colours you chose and the drawing.
Thanks. After losing one pencil and my Dark Naples Ochre shrinking from my canvas wrap set, I wanted to have a few more color options suitable for rendering warm skin tones.
I bought a few of these today. I tried them in the store, and they are wonderful! I think I like them just a bit more than the Faber Castell. The colour lays down really smoothly. F.C. are still great too though.
I would tend to agree. While I love my Albrecht Durer pencils, the few Caran D'Ache Supracolor and Museum watercolor leads that I have tried seem to perform a tad better. Now that they retail for a little bit less than the former as open stock, I am more inclined to start refilling my sets with Supracolor pencils.
I was browsing around comparing the effects and whats the difference between all the watercolour pencils and brands, then i stumbled across this blog and thought " i really appreciate the time and effort you put into trying out all these mediums", and also i bought a set of 18 Caran D'Ache supracolors ^^"
I'm not too custom with water colours because i do more lineart or digital art - so this will be interesting :3
Oh and i'll most likely post it in my artblog when it's done so if you want to take a look-see (i'll give credit to you because if it were for the work you've done i may not have got these)

Glad you found this post was helpful Ellie. Enjoy your new set of watercolor pencils, I hope you also got a nice waterbrush or sable brush to get the most out of them. For further reference on your new tools, you might want to check out Cathy Johnson's "Watercolor Pencil Magic" at the library.
