Self-Sharpening Pencil and Faber-Castell Perfect Pencil

I found this Chinese-made pencil cap/sharpener accessory at the Borders Paperchase British stationery section that claimed to be "A practical and efficient way to always have a sharp pencil in your pocket" on the back of its card.
Above photo shows a close up of the sharpener and waste container of the Self-Sharpening Pencil. The soft plastic lid did not remain tightly closed on the waste container while sharpening the pencil. The cap protection function is effective, but the sharpening resulted in a rather blunt tip. Still at about 1/3 of the list price of the harder-to-find green plastic Faber-Castell Perfect Pencil, it is an ok value as a somewhat functional accessory to premium wooden pencils.
The Perfect Pencil sharpener actually yielded a sharper point on a Mitsubishi Hi-Uni 3B pencil. Its grip design and functional metal clip make it a more effective protector and lengthener.
Given the price and design shortcomings, neither product is a perfect solution for using traditional wooden pencils on-the-go. Though for those of us that have rediscovered the joy of working with premium wooden pencils, they are still a more compact practical alternative to lugging around larger sketching kits with multiple bulkier pencil accessories.

I have a pack of sharpeners similar the one on the self sharpening pencil. I got it at Daiso. They work well with hexagonal pencils.

Good to know. Funny how it never occurred to me to go into Daiso despite my many trips to Kinokuniya. Will have to make a point to check that store out quite thoroughly on my next visit to the West Coast.
